BRIEF POSITION SUMMARY

Performs moderately complex (journey-level) curatorial work as the Department Head of Collections and Operations at the Texas Military Forces Museum. Work involves overseeing the preservation, cataloging, and exhibition of collections and related materials; performing research work; assisting researchers, authors, other museums, and the public with research questions; and conducting programs for outside organizations regarding the museum, its programs, and collections. May assist with conducting educational tours, programs and special events. Reports to the Museum Director and works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

WORK HOURS: Monday – Friday, 40 hours a week, with some weekends, holidays and nights

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Processes and catalogs incoming artifacts
  • Manages incoming and outgoing artifact loans
  • Trains and supervises curatorial staff, interns and volunteers
  • Meets with artifact donors and potential donors
  • Provides first echelon preservation and treatment of artifacts
  • Maintains all artifact records and past perfect artifact database
  • Conducts required inventories and audits of museum collection and manages museum library and archives
  • Selects artifacts for and assists with planning exhibits
  • Responsible for the care of artifacts on exhibit
  • Assists researchers and authors
  • Assists with management of museum's social media
  • Researches and writes artifact label text
  • Conducts community outreach via programs, talks, presentations, and interviews
  • Assists with museum programs and events, to include some weekends and holidays
  • Assists in exhibit planning and maintenance
  • Recommends curatorial budget
  • Serves as a member of the Museum Master Planning and Accession committees
  • Responsible for museum operations when Museum Director is not present
  • Performs related work as assigned.
  • Attends work regularly and observes approved work hours in accordance with agency state employee policies & procedures handbook.
  • May be required to perform duty in support of national emergencies, disasters, and other missions, to include on holidays and weekends.

Qualifications


MINIMUM QUALIFICATION

EDUCATION:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university is required. (Substitution allowed)

PREFERRED EDUCATION:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university, with major course work in museum studies, history, government, or a related field is preferred.

SUBSTITUTION:

  • Additional years of experience in museum curatorial work or managing office program functions or processes may be substituted for required education on a year-per-year basis.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Two years of experience in museum curatorial work is required.
  • Experience using Microsoft applications to include Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel is required.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience working in a military environment is preferred.
  • Knowledge of U.S. military material culture is preferred.

REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE:

  • Valid driver’s license is required. *If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident. A satisfactory driving record is required for operating state or personal vehicles to conduct agency business.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Selected candidate must pass federal security background investigation. The process includes a National Agency Check and Inquiry (NACI) and fingerprinting. New employees must complete and sign the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Form SF85. Completed forms are submitted to the OPM for the background investigations.
  • The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 requires all new employees to present proof of eligibility to work in the United States within three (3) days of being hired. The Texas Military Department participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each new employee's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization.

PHYSICAL/WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is generally performed inside a climate-controlled space, and incumbent is exposed to normal office temperatures and noise. Some work is performed in environments that are not climate-controlled environments and in outside conditions, which may include working in the heat, rain, wind, and cold during events. Work involves standing, walking, cleaning, painting, and working with computers and related equipment. May lift, carry, move, and/or set up equipment and heavy objects.
