The Senior Petroleum Engineer position report directly to the Lead Petroleum Engineer in KeyBank’s office in Houston, TX.
As a key part of KeyBank’s energy team, this role will provide the corporate banking function with petroleum engineering support, including the technical and economic evaluation of petroleum properties in a manner that conforms to good engineering practice and KeyBank policy as it relates to oil and gas loans and other extensions of credit. The Senior Petroleum Engineer’s prime function is the determination of corporate lending values based on a strong understanding of oil and gas lending risks.
The Senior Petroleum Engineer will assist KeyBank’s Lead Petroleum Engineer in evaluating, building, supporting, and maintain portfolios when engineering support is required.
Specifically, this individual will have the following significant responsibilities: - Evaluates 3rd party reserve reports with a view to establishing an independent lending value that is in adherence to KeyBank’s formal lending policy and historical risk tolerances.
- Prepares memos in support of credit applications that contain an independent assessment of an appropriate lending value, the risks and merits of the client’s asset portfolio, abilities of management, and the quality of a client’s producing assets as it relates to other clients and the industry in general.
- Supports the technical evaluation of oil & gas assets as well as production updates to complete a collateral valuation, credit analysis and cash flow models for upstream companies.
- Utilizes a corporate cash flow model using KeyBank’s standard models incorporating economic assumptions such as production forecasts, reserves, commodity prices, operating costs, discount rate.
- Employs industry software (e.g. Aries / PHDWin) to confirm client reserve assessments.
- Reviews the technical and economic input parameters to the client reserve report to ensure compliance to historical data.
- Assesses the experience level and competence of a client’s technical management team.
- Assesses the reasonableness of a client’s business strategy as well as historical success at achieving strategic targets.
- Discusses the engineering risks and merits of each deal with portfolio management, relationship managers, the credit team, and bank senior management.
- Assists as needed in business development and execution of bank mandates including syndications.
- Make client and prospect calls to conduct due diligence in coordination with the Oil and Gas banking team.
- Assists banking, portfolio management and credit teams in the establishment of lending policies and the oil and gas pricing deck.
- Assists with miscellaneous technical project related duties as required.
- Performs periodic reviews/testing of portfolio metrics.
- Expected to maintain a network of other bank petroleum engineers to assess market risk issues and to establish an appropriate oil and gas price deck.
EXPERIENCE / SKILLS REQUIRED: Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering or other Engineering equivalent
- Minimum of ten to fifteen years of total experience in the oil and gas industry
- Minimum of five years of experience in Reserve Based Lending
- Working knowledge of Aries/PHDWin, MS Excel and Access, as well as other Microsoft Office Products.
- Working knowledge of PRMS and SEC oil and gas reporting requirements
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in petroleum engineering or MBA
- Some level of industry experience prior to finance and/or Reserve Based Lending
