About the Indiana Department of Insurance (IDOI): 
The purpose of the Indiana Department of Insurance is to protect Hoosiers as they purchase and use insurance products to keep their assets and their families from loss or harm. Consumers may need assistance with certain claim situations or just help in understanding how their policies work. Our other primary obligation is to monitor the financial solvency of the insurance companies domiciled in Indiana so that the legal promises made in insurance policies are honored. To these ends, our Department staff is committed to providing exceptional customer service for both our consumers and our companies, and to maintain a fair and objective viewpoint as we examine each issue and circumstance within our jurisdiction. 

 

Role Overview

The Senior Investigator is responsible for the investigation of complaints filed by consumers or initiated by Department staff. Following the complete investigation of relevant facts, the Senior Investigator will apply relevant statutes, regulations, and legal precedent to determine whether there has been a violation of Indiana insurance law. The Senior Investigator will work to resolve consumer complaints and assist Department staff in bringing adminstrative action against persons or entities who violate Indiana Code.

 

Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $53,222.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:

  • Thoroughly investigate assigned cases.
  • Must have extensive knowledge of Title 27 of Indiana Code, Title 760 of Indiana Administrative Code and pertinent case law
  • Must be able to read, understand and apply all types of insurance policies, including Property & Casualty, Life, Accident, Health, Annuities, and other types of insurance
  • Must have a working knowledge of business practices of insurance companies, including their underwriting and claims handling procedures; insurance agencies, including captive, indepenedent, surplus lines and specialty insurance agents; third party administrators; independent and public adjusters; and other insurance related business entities
  • Must have excellent negotiation and investigative skills
  • Must be able to draft legal documents, including pleadings, for administrative court proceedings
  • Must be able to testify under oath at Department hearings
  • Must have sound judgment and ability to make recommendations to Department staff on how to resolve consumer complaints and whether or not to take administrative action against persons or entities regulated by the Department
  • Must be able to identify cases where the Department does not have proper jurisdiction, and refer complainants to the appropriate Federal, State or local agency, or to other appropriate government or civil entities.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Undergraduate degree in a related field preferred and significant experience in insurance claims settlement, investigations and case management;
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply state rules and regulations, specifically those applying to the activities of insurance producers and companies;
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
  • Organizational ability to formulate and carry out case assignments and make recommendations on litigation strategies;
  • Presentational skills with ability to persuade;
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to apply all requirements established by governing bodies;
  • Ability to apply insurance law precedents and Title 27 of the Indiana Code;
  • Participation in training programs and leadership skills education courses;
  • Ability to effectively manage large case load;
  • Ability to analyze complex problems and make sound resolutions of problems;
  • Ability to tactfully communicate with a wide variety of professionals and others involved to resolve disputes

Difficulty of Work:

The Senior Investigator position requires extensive knowledge and experience. It also requires the ability to read, understand and apply insurance policies, as well as insurance laws and regulations. In addition, the Senior Insurance examiner must make sound recommendations on how to resolve consumer complaints, must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and must be able to represent the Department effectively and persuasively in formal and informal Department hearings and meetings.

Responsibility:

High. The Senior Investigator is responsible for timely action in all cases as assigned, and providing well reasoned and accurate analysis.
