The County of San Luis Obispo Public Health Department is currently recruiting for a full time, Public Health Nutritionist I to join the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program. The position will primarily be located at the Paso Robles WIC site. There is some flexibility with working remotely at another WIC office. Must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
Key responsibilities:
Eligibility and Counseling with a Participant-Centered Approach
Assess eligibility following WIC guidelines, explain how the program works, and provide compassionate, personalized counseling to support families in achieving their nutrition and breastfeeding goals.
Nutrition and Breastfeeding Education
Conduct comprehensive assessments and provide individual and group education sessions tailored to make breastfeeding and nutrition topics accessible and relevant. Engage WIC families with enthusiasm to promote healthy choices and lifelong wellness.
Culturally Responsive Care
Provide counseling with cultural humility, recognizing the diverse needs of WIC families, and ensuring services are inclusive, respectful, and tailored to underserved communities.
Team Collaboration and Mentorship
Collaborate effectively with WIC paraprofessional staff, local hospitals, health plans, medical providers, and community partners; mentor paraprofessional staff to build skills and support their professional development.
Community Resource Connection Refer families to appropriate medical, social, and community resources, strengthening connections to essential health and social services for holistic family support.
Program Improvement and Compliance Conduct vendor liaison visits to maintain compliance and improve program outcomes, driving success through innovative problem-solving and ongoing program evaluation.

Knowledge of:
Public Health Nutritionist I: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in Nutritional Sciences, Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, Dietetics or Public Health Nutrition and one year of training in a dietetic internship approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND®).
