Job Description

Johns Hopkins University Press seeks a Publishing Intern who will assist with various tasks related to the publishing process, including editing, proofreading, research, and administrative duties in areas such as Acquisitions, Manuscript Editing, Design, Production, Sales, Marketing, Distribution, Finance, and IT. The Publishing Intern will join a team of exceptional professionals committed to bringing the benefits of discovery to the world by providing global access, impact, and influence for the scholarship that we publish and distribute. This position will help to ensure that the Press is a leader in selecting and developing innovative ideas and scholarship, creating and embracing transformative technologies to enhance discovery and learning, and connecting people to the most trusted knowledge from global researchers, scholars, and educators.


The ideal candidate will have a passion for the publishing industry and a desire to learn and grow in a fast-paced environment. The internship is hybrid with some tasks performed remotely and regular in-person meetings at the Johns Hopkins University Press at 2715 N. Charles St, Baltimore, MD 21218. Candidates are eligible to apply if they are actively enrolled as a college/university student with an interest in the publishing industry at an accredited University or College within 30 miles of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Applicants are required to submit two short essays – 1) what interests you about this internship and 2) what does DEIA (diversity, equity, inclusion, and access) mean to you? Priority is given to first-generation and low-income applicants. This position reports to the Director, Publishing Operations.

The salary for this position is $15.70 per hour.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Attend team/department meetings and actively participates/takes on opportunities to share knowledge and learn skills.
  • Gain knowledge of the press's/division's/department's functions; may job shadow various roles within the department in order to understand roles in the organization.
  • May be assigned one or more specific projects during the internship.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the process and accountability for the results/outcomes.
  • Work independently or as a member of a team to accomplish tasks.
  • Involve others when needed in a timely manner and work to meet timesheet and project timelines.
  • Conduct all activities with the highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures, supporting the organizations corporate integrity efforts by acting in an ethical and appropriate manner, reporting a known or suspected violation of applicable rules, and cooperating fully with all organizational investigations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • Six months related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
