Part-time/temporary faculty positions offer flexible hours and the opportunity to assist a diverse group of adult students in achieving their educational goals.  As one of the largest community college districts in southern California, we offer a wide range of opportunities in transfer, general education, and vocational and occupational programs.  These part-time positions are as needed and applicants should live within commuting distance to Orange County.

Performance Responsibilities

  • Provide quality instruction in accordance with established curriculum and course outlines.
  • Create and maintain an environment that emphasizes teaching and learning and encourages free discussion of ideas, interests, and issues.
  • Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
  • Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter areas.
  • Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a part-time/temporary faculty member.
  • Teach all scheduled classes.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Assignments may include day, evening, weekend, online, and/or off-campus classes.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Must meet one of the following qualifications under (1) through (4) and demonstrate evidence of D.E.I.A. (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Access):
  1. Valid California Community College Instructor credential, appropriate to the subject, per Education Code 87355 (issued prior to July 1, 1990); OR
  2. Any Master's degree level discipline in which learning assistance or tutoring is provided at the college where the coordinator is employed; OR
    • (a) the minimum qualifications to teach any master's level discipline in which learning assistance or tutoring is provided at the college where the coordinator is employed.
  3. A Master's degree in education, educational psychology, or instructional psychology, or other master's degree with emphasis in adult learning theory; OR
  4. Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required materials.  Please see "Additional Information" below to determine if you need to submit an Application for Equivalency.

AND

  • Demonstrated evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.

Conditions of Employment

Employment is on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon verification of employment history, background verification as governed under Education Code requirements, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees. The hours of work and effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. 

This is a CONTINUOUS recruitment for an applicant POOL to fill part-time, temporary, hourly assignments on an as-needed basis. Departments or Divisions will refer to the POOL of applications on file to fill temporary assignments as the need arises. Part-time faculty applications are accepted year-round and will remain in the pool for one year. You will be contacted by the hiring manager should the department/division be interested in scheduling an interview.  Please note: Possession of the minimum qualifications does not ensure an interview.

How to determine if you need Equivalency?  Candidates who do not meet the minimum requirements as stated in the job posting, but feel they have a combination of education and experience that would be equivalent to the  State Minimum Qualifications , must attach a completed  Application for Equivalency Form (Download PDF reader) . Additionally, in order to establish salary/class placement of hired faculty with the Coast Community College District, unless the degree is a doctorate in the discipline being taught, the highest class placement will be calculated by the number of upper-division/graduate units earned past a bachelor's/master's degree. When requesting foreign transcripts to be evaluated, it is the  applicant/employee's responsibility to request to have the specific units evaluated as well (i.e., include the number of units earned per course and the level of the course taken [upper division, graduate, lower division, undergraduate, etc.]).

Note The above information does not apply to Law degrees (J.D.). All J.D. degrees must be earned from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA) or the California Bar Association (CBA).

Sabbatical Leaves
Faculty members are encouraged to pursue professional growth leading to the development of increased competence and the improvement of instruction and/or redirection in their current teaching discipline. The District's sabbatical leave program is designed to assist in this pursuit and is available on a semester basis after completing six consecutive years of service.

Academic Senate
The Academic Senate is the governing body at each of our colleges for making recommendations to administration and to our Board of Trustees with respect to academic and professional matters. The Senate consists of elected faculty and has the responsibility for matters related to curriculum and general academic policy.

Time to Refuel
Vacation
Classified, contract staff earn vacation days commensurate with years of service. Classified Management and Administrators earn 22 days vacation per year.

Sick Leave
All contract employees earn sick leave as outlined in the CA Education Code. Sick leave may be carried over from year-to-year and, upon retirement, unused sick leave may contribute to your PERS and STRS retiree benefit.

Holidays
The District observes 21 paid holidays per year.

Jury Duty, Bereavement, Military Leave
Coast grants contract employees called to jury duty a leave of absence, without loss of pay, for the entire length of required service. Other available leaves include bereavement from 3-5 days and military leaves of absence in accordance with applicable state laws.

Great Expectations
Pension Plans
The District participates in the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) and the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) for contract employees. Non-contract employees participate in Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) plan for the first 1,000 hours of their employment.
Additionally, it is the policy of the Coast Community College District that contract employees who retire from the District with ten or more years of service be afforded the same group insurance benefits until 70 years of age. A Medicare Supplement or GAP plan  is available to retirees and their spouses after age 70.

Annuities
The District maintains a program whereby qualified employees may request through Payroll to have a portion of his or her salary deposited under a tax sheltered annuity plan or an approved deferred compensation plan.
