Job Title:

School Occupational Therapist

Reports To:

Director of Special Education / School Administrator

Job Summary:

The School Occupational Therapist supports students' ability to engage in their educational activities by addressing physical, sensory, emotional, and cognitive challenges. They assess students' needs, provide direct intervention, and collaborate with educators, families, and other professionals to create strategies and modifications to enhance students' participation and success in the school environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Assessment and Evaluation

• Conduct evaluations of students referred for occupational therapy services.
• Analyze sensory-motor, cognitive, emotional, and functional abilities affecting academic performance and school participation.
• Develop and interpret Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals based on assessment results and student needs.

Intervention and Therapy

• Design and implement therapy programs to enhance students' ability to perform school-related tasks.
• Provide individual or group therapy sessions targeting motor skills, self-regulation, handwriting, self-care, and other functional skills.
• Recommend and oversee the use of assistive devices and adaptive equipment.

Collaboration and Consultation

• Work with teachers, parents, and school staff to support students in meeting educational goals.
• Provide strategies for modifying classroom environments and activities to accommodate students’ needs.
• Educate staff on best practices for sensory and motor skill development in the classroom.

Documentation and Compliance

• Maintain accurate and timely documentation of assessments, progress notes, and interventions.
• Participate in IEP meetings, providing expert input on occupational therapy needs.
• Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations regarding therapy services.

Professional Development

• Stay updated on current trends and best practices in pediatric and school-based occupational therapy.
• Attend workshops, training sessions, and professional development opportunities as required.

Required Qualifications:

• Education: Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited program..
• Licensure: Current state licensure as an Occupational Therapist.
• Experience: Previous experience in pediatric or school-based occupational therapy preferred.

• Ability to adapt therapy techniques to diverse student needs.
• Knowledge of special education laws, including IDEA and Section 504.
• Problem-solving skills for addressing unique student challenges.
• Organizational skills for managing caseloads, documentation, and deadlines.
