Departmental Overview

The 34-acre UC Botanical Garden is one of the most diverse landscapes in the world, with over 10,000 types of plants including many rare and endangered species. Organized geographically, the Garden features 9 regions of naturalistic plantings from Australasia to South Africa, along with a major collection of California native plants. The Garden was established in 1890 and its living collections are invaluable resources for international research and conservation.

The University of California Botanical Garden is a living museum open to the public and welcomes nearly 100,000 visitors each year. The Garden hosts over 200 events annually, both hosted by the Garden and hosted by others through the Rental program. The incumbent is responsible for responding to grounds and building/facilities needs and issues related to those that are utilized by the visiting public, keeping areas of responsibility clean, attractive, safe, in good working order, and meets the needs of its purpose. Grounds includes the parking lot and all visitor accessible routes and locations throughout the Garden. The buildings and facilities supported by the position includes all publicly accessed and rented locations, furnishings, and includes trash/recycling/compost. The incumbent will communicate with a Garden supervisor when campus resources are needed for a coordinated response and resolution. The incumbent will mow the lawn and rake/blow outdoor rental sites. Incumbent will support events at the Garden by assisting with parking lot/shuttle issues, furniture set-ups, install and breakdown of exhibits, and other tasks as needed. The incumbent will be asked to respond as the safety representative in the event of an incident or emergency, and serve on the safety committee. Incumbent will occasionally assist landscape horticulturists on work related to public stairs.

Responsibilities

  • Handle trash/compost/recycle from public Garden bins, sweep areas as needed, pick up trash and debris
  • Assess and address accessibility concerns along paths, resolve issues or put out temporary path closures
  • Mow lawn, rake/blow outdoor rental sites
  • Unlocking/locking areas and facilities as needed, perform security checks
  • Provide assistance for special projects including pathwork and outdoor stairs
  • Herbicide and pesticide application as directed by Management
  • Support facilities and building managers with onsite projects as needed
  • Assist in setups, moving furniture, etc.




Required Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of building and grounds maintenance and security.




Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a museum, public garden or similar public environment.
  • Basic understanding of carpentry, painting, and/or other simple construction skills.
  • Some knowledge of plants or willingness to learn.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

  • The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $24.74, Step 1.0 - $27.88, Step 7.0.
  • This is a 12-month, part-time (16 hours/week), Limited (temporary position). Hours are variable, but unlikely to exceed 16 hours a week. This may also include occasional weekends.
  • This position is not eligible for UC benefits.
  • This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Patient Care Technical Unit (EX) between the University of California and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). The current bargaining agreement manual can be found at: The funding for the position is 'one time' funding, of eighteen months or less, or the employee was hired specifically to work on a short-term project lasting no more than one year.
