Job Description
As the Fire Chief, you will play a vital role in providing strategic leadership and operational management for the Fire Department. This position involves planning, organizing, directing, staffing, budgeting, and coordinating all aspects of emergency medical services, fire prevention, and fire suppression activities within the community. You will operate under broad policy guidance and direction from the City Manager.
Supervision Exercised
In this role, you will provide general supervision to Deputy Fire Chiefs, Fire Captains, Firefighters, and administrative staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Operations Management
You will oversee:
Emergency preparedness and response as the city's Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, ensuring readiness for emergencies and disasters.
Training and development programs for departmental staff in fire prevention, suppression, emergency medical response, and hazardous materials handling.
Compliance with all relevant laws and regulations, ensuring safety and operational readiness.
The maintenance of fire stations and equipment, ensuring everything is operational and ready for deployment.
Financial Management
You will take charge of:
Preparing and managing the department's annual budget while monitoring expenditures for compliance.
Seeking and applying for alternative funding through grants and financial programs.
Personnel Management
In this capacity, you will:
Supervise department personnel by assigning and evaluating work, providing mentorship, and fostering professional development.
Assist in recruitment, screening, and hiring new team members.
Objectively evaluate staff performance and develop improvement plans when necessary.
Community Relations
Engaging with the community is key, as you will:
Conduct public meetings to inform citizens about fire hazards and department activities, making presentations to schools and civic groups.
Develop positive relationships with the community and represent the department at public events and meetings.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
Fire prevention, suppression, and investigation practices.
Emergency medical procedures and operations.
Relevant laws, codes, and regulations affecting departmental operations.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Education: A bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field is required. A master's degree or Executive Fire Officer certification is preferred.
Experience: At least ten (10) years of progressively responsible firefighting experience, with a minimum of four (4) years in a supervisory role.
Certifications and Licensures:
Required Certifications: Utah State Advanced EMT (AEMT) or Paramedic Certification, CPR, ACLS, PEPP, UFRA Firefighter I & II, UFRA Hazardous Materials Operations, UFRA Fire Officer I, and a valid State of Utah Class "D" Driver's License.
Preferred Certifications: Willingness to obtain UFRA Apparatus Driver Operator Certifications, Fire Instructor, Fire Inspector, and Fire Investigator certifications within one year of hire.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Work Environment:
This role involves work in office settings, vehicles, and outdoor environments, often in emergency situations. Exposure to firefighting hazards, including smoke and chemicals, is common.
Physical Requirements:
The position requires the ability to perform physically demanding tasks, such as climbing ladders, lifting heavy equipment, and working in confined spaces. Candidates must meet the physical fitness standards of the department.
