For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At a future date, it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. Knowledge of sustainable operations projects and concepts in areas such as greenhouse gas emission reduction, waste reduction, hazardous substance use reduction, green procurement, sustainable transportation, and sustainable landscape management.2. Experience in creating communications products for the public. This can include social media posts, newsletters, writing press releases, or any other finished communications products.3. Strong written communication, public speaking, and presentation skills with demonstrated ability to address controversial topics in a public setting. Duties Description The incumbent will be located within the Office of Sustainability within Executive and carry out tasks related to the Department's internal sustainability work.These tasks will be associated with ensuring the Department is complying with Commissioner's Policy 75, Executive Order 22, Section 7.1 of the Climate Act, and the DEC Sustainability Plan. They will include:- Leading efforts to effectively capture and maintain sustainability related data and metrics from the Department's operations. This shall include data on the Department's use of renewable energy, waste generation, zero emission equipment inventory, and other topic areas covered by the DEC's Sustainability Plan.- Assisting the Division of Operations in creating systems to capture required sustainability related data and metrics in the most efficient manner possible.- Creating effective communication products, such as newsletter articles, social media posts, and videos, in conjunction with the Division of Communications, Education, and Engagement to inspire others to follow DEC's lead and take sustainability actions.- Leading internal working groups to create program and Department policies on sustainable operations in topic areas such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing waste, reducing the use of toxic substances, and employee engagement.- Providing research and guidance on sustainable operations to the Department's programs and regions as required.- Presenting best practices from DEC's sustainability program to other State agencies through the GreenNY Council structure. This may include leading presentations and webinars, writing newsletter articles, writing case studies, or other communication needs.
