The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) employs nearly 2,300 team members operating nine institutions, which house approximately 5,200 inmates, statewide. The department's focus includes inmate programming and education, physical and behavioral health care, re-entry services, and community programs, and is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA). DUTIES:
Direct the infection control program. Oversee the risk management processes. Develop and present a wide variety of clinical care training programs regarding the significant updates in infection control or emerging infections. Ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and ACA guidelines. Update all protocols annually, or as needed, to remain consistent with current literature and practice. Oversee the plan for the management of biohazardous waste and for the decontamination of medical and dental equipment. Chair a Communicable Disease committee where infection control activities are reviewed quarterly. Prepare specific reports monthly and annually. Collect, review, and analyze clinical care performance improvement data to identify performance gaps and prepare reports. Consult with nursing director or other clinical staff to identify appropriate corrective action plans.
Requirements / Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Nebraska or authority based on the Nurse Licensure Compact to practice as a Registered Nurse in Nebraska and one year of relevant experience,
Preferred Qualifications: Three years of correctional experience. Background in statistics and research.
Proficient in Word and Excel, particularly writing programs and pivot tables. Proficient in obtaining and using necessary resources for research in the area of infection control (e.g., USPTF guidelines, CDC.gov).
Other: Must have a valid driver's license. Will complete four to eight weeks of on-the-job training. Must submit to background security check. Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the pre-employment medical examination and a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NDCS pre-service training program.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of: registered nursing theory and practice; accepted standards of care; policies and procedures governing nursing care; sanitation and infection control standards; planning, providing and evaluating quality nursing care; Nebraska regulations pertaining to nursing practice, including scope of practice parameters; psychology or another behavioral science; supervision or management of techniques, principles, or practices; adult training and development; principles and practices of employee development programs; federal and State laws, rules, policies, and accreditation standards as they apply to infection control and risk management; infectious diseases; prevention of infection.
Skill in: coordinating and providing nursing care; directing nursing service shifts or program activities, development of clinical training and teaching.
Ability to: supervise a shift or program for nursing care; oversee the maintenance of medical records, write administrative reports as required; communicate effectively orally and in writing; research, develop, and present learning opportunity programs; evaluate effectiveness of training courses; analyze data. Ability to write administrative reports. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in wiring.
