Job Description

The Chief Education and Community Engagement Officer heads the Education & Community Engagement department and reports directly to the President & CEO. This position oversees the Education and Community Engagement department's smooth operation, focusing on fulfilling the Mann s non-profit mission of providing innovative and high-impact collaborative educational activities to young people throughout the Philadelphia region. The role requires the creation of strategies, cultivating institutional partnerships, and designing programs that meaningfully connect with traditionally underserved or underrepresented youth and communities in Philadelphia. This role has three direct reports, the Manager of Education & Community Engagement Operations, the Community Special Projects Manager, and the Education Coordinator.

Responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Designs, manages, and grows the Mann Center s portfolio of programs under three major initiatives: Out-of-School Time, Workforce Development, and Cultural Convening.
  • Develop a strategy statement for Education and Community Engagement and implement it by working with the team and establishing partnerships with community-based nonprofit organizations.
  • Oversees the Community Special Projects Manager during the process of curating performing artists for all programs including but not limited to Young People s Concert Series, Mann Music Room Learn/Live, Voices of Hope, Masterclasses, cultural festivals, and other cultural convening projects.
  • Strategizes new opportunities to create community events enhancing access to the Mann Center in meaningful and impactful ways.
  • Coordinates with the Manager of Education Operations and the Community Special Projects Manager to gather program data, organize demographic information, and track students. These tasks are in collaboration with the development department crucial to grant reporting.
  • Negotiates all artist s agreements about education and community engagement events.
  • Creates growth plans for in-school partnerships and works closely with the school district of Philadelphia and local charter schools within the Mann Center s catchment.
  • Works with the president and CEO in establishing visibility of programs by presenting for city, regional, and state officials.
  • Create narrative and impactful presentations for city-wide institutions.
  • Manages four committees: Workforce Development Taskforce, Education Committee, Community Engagement & Impact Committee, and the Parkside/Wynnefield Advisory Committee.
  • Works in maintaining partnerships and relationships with cultural institutions citywide and beyond.
  • Strategizes ways to build and expand the Mann Center s workforce development programs both at the high school level and post-secondary level.
  • Works to build the Mann Center s newest workforce development program, the Music Industry Apprenticeship Program taking the program from a pilot to a fully accredited apprenticeship program.
  • Acts as an effective and contributing member of the CEO s leadership team.
  • Attends weekly Senior Staff Meetings and quarterly Board Meetings.
  • Other duties as needed for the smooth operation of the Education and Community Engagement Department.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
To be considered, applicants must have a bachelor s degree in a relevant subject area, with a minimum of eight to ten years of increasing responsibility in a senior leadership role. In addition, qualified candidates will possess:
  • Must have advanced knowledge and be proficient in all Microsoft products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint).
  • Related certifications or other advanced training in similar or relevant fields preferred.
  • Belief in the power of music to transform individuals and communities and create social change. Strong instincts and capacity for building relationships with a wide range of constituents.
  • Works effectively with artists, musicians, staff, community leaders, and volunteers.
  • Firm grasp of policies and politics associated with youth development, health, education, and workforce at both federal and state levels.
  • Must possess strong communication skills, a positive outlook, and the ability to engage others.
  • Must possess strong problem-solving skills and demonstrate experience finding creative solutions.
  • Must have strong organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Courteous and diplomatic with excellent interpersonal skills and ability to develop relationships with clients and vendors.
  • Must have superior attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work well independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to work nights, weekends, and irregular hours as driven by events schedule.
  • Ability to stand for long periods, walk up and down steps, traverse uneven surfaces, and lift < 50 lbs.
  • Must possess a valid driver s license and vehicle.
  • Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and provide proof of vaccination before commencing role.
