Biological Anthropology Intern, Spring 2025

The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.

As part of the Anthropology Internship Program, the Division of Anthropology is seeking a part-time, term Biological Anthropology Intern for Spring 2025. The Internship Program is for undergraduate and graduate students interested in careers in anthropology, museums or related fields. Anthropology interns work on projects relating to the collections or the ongoing research interests of the curatorial staff in the Museum or in the field.

The Intern can expect to work between 10-20 hours per week.

The Biological Anthropology Intern will train and participate in paleoanthropology research project to support ongoing research in the Biological Anthropology Lab (BAL). They will assist lab staff and students, so the ability to work both independently and collaboratively on research projects is essential. Additionally, excellent communication and organization skills are required. The Intern will train on data collection and processing methods, including photographic and CT-scan data; quantitatively characterize primate morphology using multiple software programs (i.e., Avizo, Geomagic, ImageJ) and save lab data in an appropriate archive/repository. A minor component of the internship involves assisting with some lab organizational work.

Job duties include:
  • Assist curatorial staff and lab members with paleoanthropological research projects. Tasks may include: digital data collection, processing/archiving scan data, quantification/data analysis and morphometrics.
  • Organize lab equipment, fossil casts, cabinets and files.

The expected salary for the Biological Anthropology Intern is $20/hour. This position is overtime-eligible.


Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.





Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Completed college-level coursework in biological anthropology, human or primate anatomy or paleontology.
  • Basic familiarity with computer programs and operations.




Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in a paleoanthropological research setting or with paleoanthropological fieldwork.
