The Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach is responsible for designing, directing and implementing periodized, evidence-based, sport specific programs for all Division I athletic programs.  The strength coach must be certified and able to assess and evaluate each student-athlete's movement and program individual needs to improve physical development; help reduce injuries; and enhance athletic performance. The strength coach will serve as a resource to student-athletes for providing educational resources about nutrition, supplements and diet.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and educate student-athletes on the proper techniques for all weight training activities. Effectively communicate, monitor and supervise all weight training and conditioning activities to ensure safety and welfare for student-athletes.
  • Provide expert instruction in the use of weight machines, conditioning equipment and be able to tailor different program based upon the needs of teams and/or individual athletes.
  • Knowledge to effectively design and implement sport specific and individual strength and conditioning programs for all assigned sports.
  • Work with each Head Coach to develop weight training and conditioning programs that are specific to sport, adequately prepares and conditions student-athletes for practice and competition.
  • In collaboration with the athletic training staff, assist with the development and implementation of rehabilitation, reconditioning programs for the injured student-athlete(s).
  • Maintain requirements for continuing education to remain current in strength and conditioning trends, nutritional programs and supplement use.
  • Schedule strength and conditioning times for assigned sports with consideration for gender equity and Title IX.
  • Assist with annual budget preparation for the Strength and Conditioning department
  • Provide regular educational programs for coaches and student-athletes regarding strength and conditioning, nutrition and supplement use.
  • Evaluate all strength and conditioning equipment and make recommendations for repair and replacement.
  • Supervision of student interns.
  • Other reasonable duties as assigned.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships:

  • Reports to Assistant Athletic Director Strength and Conditioning
  • Supervises the following positions: Student interns

Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge of all student-athlete safety and welfare items especially mental health and nutrition.
  • Knowledge of NCAA and conference affiliate policies and procedures. 
  • Ability to work varying schedules (evenings, weekends, holidays, etc.).
  • Ability to travel.
  • Ability to work under pressure and make sound decisions.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team setting.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks.




Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization in strength and conditioning, preferably in kinesiology, physiology or exercise related field.
  • Current certification through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) or the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCA) and certification in CPR/AED Training.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in kinesiology, physiology or exercise related field.
  • 1+ years of experience as a certified strength and conditioning coach.
  • Experience working at the Division I level.
  • Experience working with specific sport this position will be assigned to.

Working Environment:

  • Strength coaches are student-facing employees so it's critical they are available and accessible during their typical work schedule.
  • Office environment consists of: Creating strength and conditioning programs, data entry/analysis, communication with department & medical personnel, meeting with coaches, staff & student-athletes, returning phone calls, emails, etc.  This is typically where the administrative tasks are completed.
  • Varsity weight room environment consists of: Lead teams through strength and conditioning exercises with a focus on enhancing physical development and injury prevention.  Create and implement specific programs for injured student-athletes or those who are rehabilitating from an injury that will allow them to gradually return to full participation in activity.  Demonstrate a high energy level to motivate and encourage student-athletes.  This is a fast-paced environment where multiple student-athletes/teams weight training so the ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks are critical to the success of the operation.
  • Sport-specific venue consists of: Conducting conditioning drills designed to increase strength and endurance, leading the pre- and post-practice/competition stretch/warm-up/cool down, observing practices/competitions as time allows, etc.  This may require working outdoors during inclement weather.
  • This job is physical in nature.  The physical demands include moderate lifting, ability to demonstrate exercises/lift techniques to student-athletes, ability to work from multiple locations within the department depending on the activity, ability to assist in setting up the necessary equipment on the field/court, etc.
  • Strength coaches may be contacted after their typical work hours to answer questions, respond to inquiries, provide individual or team-specific information, etc. 
  • Strength coaches may be required to perform their responsibilities at locales away from home (opposing teams' venue, hotel, etc.).

Professional Rank and Salary Range: SL-2, $49,661
